Blog / Elopement wedding photography at The Athenaeum, Bury St Edmunds
Sara and Richard chose to have an intimate elopement wedding at the Athenaeum in Bury St Edmunds. It really is an honor to be asked to be a part of such special days like this. I’m in on the secret, and that’s such a joy for me. I love the anticipation of the couple, on top of the excitement of the wedding. There is also the wondering about the reactions they’ll receive after the big reveal. And how will they reveal it? Who will they tell first? It’s so exciting and a little scary, but that adds to the amazing energy of the day.
The Athenaeum is a lovely building in the heart of the bustling town of Bury St Edmunds. I’ve shot weddings here several times, you can see an example here. It’s the register office for the town, plus it has amazing reception facilities if you’re having a bigger day .
Sara and Richard had two friends as witnesses, and after an emotional ceremony, all five of us wandered over to the Abbey Gardens. It’s a glorious 14-acre park and it is on the site of a former Benedictine Abbey. Stunning gardens and the abbey ruins make for some lovely backdrops for couples photographs. I’ve photographed quite a few couples in the Abbey Gardens now, and I’m always surprised that I find new areas every time. With this wedding, we found a gorgeous iron gated garden area, such a treat to photograph Sara and Richard infront of this.
The couple and their friends then headed to Maison Bleue for a lovely celebration meal. There was a party planned for the Saturday at their home (did I mention the wedding day was also Sara’s 40th birthday? Double whammy!!) where they were going to surprise everyone. What a way to do it!
Again, such a joy to be a part of this day. Thanks so much guys xx
